Generative AI can create convincing images within seconds. As these tools improve, viewers may find it harder to determine whether a photograph records a real event, contains major alterations or was produced entirely by software.
Photographers therefore face a new challenge. Capturing an authentic image is no longer enough when audiences, editors and clients cannot easily verify its origin.
Content Credentials record how an image was created and changed, helping photographers protect their credibility without abandoning normal editing.
Understand What Content Credentials Record
Content Credentials are secure provenance information attached to a digital file. They can identify the device or application that created the image and record selected actions taken during editing.
A credential may include the creator’s verified identity, capture device, editing history and whether generative AI tools were involved.
The information is cryptographically signed. If someone changes the credential or associated file in an unsupported way, verification tools may detect that the recorded history is no longer intact.
Begin the Record at Capture
The strongest provenance trail starts when the shutter is pressed. Compatible cameras can sign photographs at capture, establishing that the file originated from a particular device before it entered an editing application.
Supported editing and authenticity tools can also attach credentials later, although this does not provide the same evidence about the original capture.

Verify the Exported Image
Upload the exported image to a trusted Content Credentials verification tool and review the information displayed.
Check whether your name, editing actions and origin details appear as intended. Avoid including sensitive information that you do not want clients or the public to see.
Verification should also become part of delivery. If authenticity matters to a client, provide the credential-enabled file and explain how it can be inspected.
Know What Credentials Cannot Prove
Content Credentials do not prove that the scene itself was truthful. A signed camera can still photograph a staged event, and accurate provenance cannot explain missing context.
Credentials may also disappear when an image is screenshotted, reformatted or uploaded to a platform that removes metadata. Their absence does not prove that an image is fake, just as their presence does not guarantee that every claim surrounding it is accurate.
Build Trust Through Transparency
Content Credentials are not a perfect detector of truth. They are a transparent record that helps viewers understand where an image came from and how it changed.
By adopting provenance tools, preserving original files and describing edits honestly, photographers can make their work easier to trust. In an age of synthetic imagery, a clear creative history may become as valuable as technical quality.
